Hi, I'm Shalman, and I help people find in themselves the strength and skills to reclaim their lives. Typically, I use Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Cognitive Behavior Therapy, and mindfulness-based methods in my practice, but I will incorporate aspects of Narrative Therapy, Motivational Interviewing, Intersectional theory (including gender-specific lenses) and evolutionary psychology if appropriate.

My education includes Addiction Counseling, Psychology and Clinical Mental Health Counseling from colleges in Portland. Over the past 19 years, I have received specialized training in medication-assisted addiction treatment, working with parents involved with the child welfare system, behaviorism, criminality, interpersonal neurobiology, ex-prison re-entry, Men's issues, and anxiety disorders.

Perhaps you are skeptical of therapy, for which there are some valid reasons, but the research shows that the biggest factor in someone feeling like therapy is helpful, is the relationship you build with your therapist. Give it a shot, and if we aren't a good match, I'll help you find someone who is.

Outside of my work: I am into music, camping, old movies and cooking.

I was born in Portland and grew up in the Northwest, graduating from Linfield College in McMinnville, OR before working as a Vocational Rehabilitation Counselor in Oregon for 17 years. I returned to graduate school at mid-life and earned a Masters Degree in Social Work from Eastern Washington University in 2006. I completed my clinical license (LCSW) in Montana, while working at the largest elementary school in the state for 8 years, before returning to Oregon to be closer to my family.

While in Montana I practiced individual and group therapy with children and their families. I also coached and refereed youth and middle school football for 10 years and use motivational interviewing and life coaching techniques in my daily practice.

I am a Cognitive Behavioral Therapist (CBT), which is short term in nature and focuses on providing you tools and new ways to think about your problems, so you can begin to start making needed changes in your life. There are no magic pills or painless solutions to most life issues, but CBT can give you the tools you need to help you make the small and larger changes needed for your life to start improving. It is up to you.

I help people who realize that some things in their life are not working and need to change. The world has shifted and we need to adapt to rapidly changing events beyond our control; as well as get some daily relief from the ongoing stress, anxiety, poor sleep and depression many people face daily.

Since February 2020 I have been doing remote Teletherapy with adults and older teens and found it works to help people change their lives. Be prepared to do your homework, I always give you more to do between our sessions, so you can progress at your own pace.

If you would like to work with me, please complete the application below.

A warm hello and welcome!

I seek to encourage people in growing hope, in creating meaningfulness and realizing perspectives from life experiences, to self-empower and self-accept in a safe, confidential, non-judgmental space, free of stigma and shame.

Counseling can be transformative and healing. Counseling can also be challenging and uncomfortable at times.  It is important to take it at one’s own pace. There are many different counselors to choose from and it can be self-empowering to choose a counselor or therapist that feels right to you.

My counseling approach is respectful, trauma-informed, person-centered, strengths-based and holistic. I believe wellness is possible through creating self-care practices, identifying and expanding positive coping and individual strengths, growing resilience and cultivating inner wisdom.

I have worked primarily with talk therapy, creating the space and time to listen and listen deeply to what matters, exploring goals, naming and understanding obstacles, creating measureable action steps towards your decided goals.

I hold a master of science in Rehabilitation Counseling from San Francisco State University and am a Certified Rehabilitation Counselor (CRC). I am a trained counseling professional specializing in working with people living with disabilities, chronic illness, co-occurring conditions, and/or existing diagnoses.

Since 2011, I have trained and worked with culturally and socioeconomically diverse people in diverse settings: community mental health, addictions/harm reduction, re-entry, transitional housing, clinical counseling, Veterans in recovery, street outreach, Veterans and community crisis/suicide prevention/intervention, vocational rehabilitation/return-to-work, and vocational organic landscape gardening training and teaching.

I am an ally and advocate to Military/Veterans, Disability, LGBT+, and BIPOC communities. I am happy to now be working at Stronger Oregon via telehealth to expand access to counseling during this covid-19 experience. I am a registered licensed professional counselor (LPC) Associate in Oregon and as an associate, I receive regular clinical supervision from a licensed clinician. I will share more information at the first session.

Mabuhay! (Welcome),

I commend you for taking the courageous step of seeking support and assistance to address your mental health and overall well-being. Opening up about your daily struggles requires tremendous vulnerability, and I want you to know that you are in a safe space. My goal is to meet you where you are on your journey towards wellness and provide the necessary support.

My name is Levin Manabat, and I am a BIPOC, Trauma-Focused Clinical Social Work Associate (CSWA), currently pursuing certification as a Sex Therapist with AASECT (American Association of Sexuality Educators, Counselors, and Therapists). I hold a Masters Degree in Social Work (MSW) with a specialization in clinical social work and Trauma Practice Specialization from Widener University. Additionally, I have a Bachelors Degree in Social Work (BSW), equipping me with knowledge in generalist social work practices such as case management, referral and resources, and advocacy. My credentials include a Clinical Social Work Associate (CSWA) license, Certified Financial Social Worker (CFSW), Clinical Military Counselor Certification (CMCC), and Certified Trauma Practitioner (CTP).

In my therapeutic approach, I utilize a trauma-focused lens, decolonizing social work practices, and a trauma-informed Motivational Interviewing (MI). I also employ a Strengths-Based perspective, recognizing and building upon your existing strengths. Some of the interventions I incorporate in my practice include various Somatic Techniques for grounding, as well as evidence-based treatment modalities from Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Trauma-Focused Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (TF-ACT), Solution-Focused Therapy (SFT), and more.

In my sex therapy practice, we will explore and address a range of issues such as; communication in couples, fostering closeness, building playfulness, desire and arousal, gender and sexual diversity, sexual dysfunction, monogamy, polygamous relationships, sexual anxiety, mismatched desire, out-of-control sexual behavior, kink & BDSM, and many other areas of concern and interest.

Additionally, in my work as a financial social worker, we can delve into issues surrounding financial anxiety, impulsive spending, exploring triggers related to spending, developing a healthier relationship with money, and various other financial concerns.

Allow me to share a bit about myself. I identify as Filipino, and my personal life journey has provided me with a wealth of knowledge, skills, and experiences that may resonate with or differ from your own. As a former youth in the foster care system, a member of the LGBTQ+ and HIV/AIDS community, and an immigrant belonging to a minority group, I possess a deeper understanding of issues such as systemic racism, social stigma, discrimination, marginalization, and oppressive practices.

As part of my own self-care plan, I actively engage in mindfulness skills, meditation, and routinely head to the gym. During my free time, I find joy in traveling and camping with my significant other and our three dogs, exploring various national and state parks.

Please know that I am here to support you, and together we will work towards your goals and overall well-being.

I have over 10 years experience working in residential and community settings providing services to youth and their families. I draw from many modalities and adjust based on my client’s needs.

I received my Masters degree in Clinical Counseling from George Fox University in 2013. This new career path came after I had been a foster parent for several years. I have much experience with youth in foster care and their caregivers. I am certified Post Adoption and FosterCare therapist with ORPARC which has given me a strong foundation when working with this population. I also really enjoy working towards reunification goals both with the biological family and the youth as they navigate emotions especially after a long periods in care.

For younger children, I believe their language is play so will often incorporate play therapy techniques in sessions. Parent participation is strongly recommended as young people often struggle with big emotions and don’t know how to express themselves. The best way for me to teach them and incorporate better coping strategies is for them to practice at home as well.

For tweens, teens and young adults I believe developing their voice and autonomy is very important. We will navigate treatment planning and therapy goals collaboratively with parental involvement as necessary. I rely strongly on Dialectical Behavioral Therapy(DBT) for this age believing the positive effects in learning distress tolerance, interpersonal effectiveness, emotional regulation, and mindfulness skills will benefit everyone. DBT is especially effective when treating youth experiencing suicidal ideations or self harm.

I will work with any diagnosis including but not limited to Anxiety, Depression, PTSD, ADHD, and Oppositional Defiant Disorder. I am accepting of all cultures, sexual and gender orientations. I look forward to getting to know you and help you be your best self!

I am a licensed professional counselor specializing in trauma, mood disorders, behavior issues and various other challenges faced by adults and children alike. Over the past 14+ years I have worked everywhere from residential and intensive in-home programs to outpatient and independent living working with people of all ages and their families to help them better understand the roots of their struggles and practice strategies that help them to achieve their goals and live happier lives.

Currently, my focus is on providing EMDR both in person and virtually as well as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and family therapy through my foundations in Collaborative Problem Solving. Collaboration and Transparency are very important to me, so expect to establish goals that matter to you, understand your diagnoses and treatment plan, and know why and how we are approaching these things in therapy.

Regardless of approach, there is nothing more satisfying than giving adults, kids, and families the tools to succeed by whatever metric is most meaningful to them.

Hello! My approach to services is strengths-based and person centered. I truly believe that individuals are the experts in their own lives. My goal is to help you identify where you are struggling and walk alongside you as you learn new skills and discover your resilience and strengths. I believe in empowering people to help themselves by building confidence in their abilities and discovering all the wonderful things they are capable of.

I have experience working with youth and their families in both inpatient residential settings and outpatient community settings. I specialize in trauma-focused care in children and adolescents. Much of my experience has been working with individuals who have experienced trafficking, as well as youth who have run from home or are experiencing homelessness. I have also worked with BIPOC youth and those who identify with the LGBTQIA+ community. My experience also includes extensive group therapy work for a multitude of concerns including; anger management, skills for managing anxiety and depression, mindfulness, self-control, poor self-esteem and body issues, and navigating trauma symptoms.

I have had specific training conducting trauma-focused cognitive behavioral therapy both in person and via telehealth. My training and experience also includes incorporating holistic approaches to care and working through inter-generational and systemic trauma. I have had training in family therapy approaches and believe in creating a space for families to come together and learn to positively communicate so that they may self-create safe, secure, and healthy family systems. I also believe that one size does not fit all and I enjoy being able to incorporate things like art, movement, and music into my practice.

I look forward to walking alongside you on your journey to self-discovery!

My passion for mental health led me into a career where I am privileged to walk alongside others who want to improve their lives. I studied psychology at the University of Oregon and social work at Portland State University. As of 2024, I have six years of experience in the mental health field and have worked with clients in a variety of settings, including schools, outpatient, and intensive outpatient (“IOP”) therapy. I have had success with helping others navigate anxiety disorders, mood disorders, trauma disorders, neurodevelopmental disorders (ADHD, ASD, FASD), and more. I enjoy helping others get through many tough spots in life, like family conflict, LGBTQ+ issues, school and career related issues, and life transitions.

As a member of the LGBTQ+ community, I am a proud provider of queer and trans-affirming care. This also means I welcome working with family members who want to improve their understanding and be better allies. I strive to meet everyone where they’re at and to create a judgment-free space. At the end of the day, I think we have more similarities with each other than differences, and we all want to live life as our true selves.

My clients would describe me as someone who is direct but gentle and determined but patient. I am someone who will enthusiastically encourage you to follow your path and also point out when you’re dousing the path with gasoline. I have been told that people feel like I handle their difficult stories with genuine respect and care. In the therapy room, I like to let you guide our conversation, but I’m also happy to provide structure to those who want it.

I’m an eclectic provider, but I gravitate towards narrative therapy, internal family systems, attachment-based therapy, and trauma-focused cognitive behavioral therapy. In plain English, that means that I like helping you make sense of the things that have happened to you, relearn how to connect with other people in a healthy way, and to teach you how to assess your own patterns and behaviors in a way that reduces your symptoms. I’m comfortable working with those 8 and up and adapt my approach to be developmentally appropriate.

Outside of the therapy room, I’m usually working on writing short stories, playing piano, gardening on my balcony, or getting into a new video game. I also have an unexplainable fondness for mediocre reality shows and time-consuming board games. If I wasn’t a therapist, I would be a science fiction author.

When life feels overwhelming, when sharks are circling your vessel with teeth bigger than your engine, you’ll need to upgrade to a bigger boat – that is, a bigger toolbox. You need more resources, more support, more skills. We’ve all been there. The cool thing is, once we build this bigger boat – toolbox – it will serve us the rest of our days. Once you have those skills, nothing can take them away.

In my work, I draw from a number of modalities and practices, but my primary approach is called ACT (Acceptance and Commitment Therapy). To me, ACT is about freedom. Freedom from the destructive thoughts that hold you back. Freedom from enslavement to painful emotions and the frantic efforts to make them stop. It’s about not feeling like a prisoner in your own head. Since receiving my Master of Social Work degree in 2007, I’ve spent much of my career working with people living with acute and chronic illness, particularly cancer. My life’s work is helping people adjust to difficult life changes, depression, anxiety, grief and loss, and other challenges. I have a special place in my heart for women transitioning to motherhood and the post-partum issues that so often arise, and individuals facing the ongoing challenges of parenting. I love the expressive arts and using poetry therapy (which sounds stuffy and boring but isn’t) to help clients find their own voice. I am open to working with adults of all ages, teens, and families. LGBTQ+ clients welcomed and valued.

My approach is grounded in compassion. It is about finding your own strengths and bolstering them with new skills to spark real and lasting change. I believe in kindness, humor, and connection, and I believe there is hidden treasure in everyone. Struggle is part of life, but struggle shouldn’t drive the bus, leaving us flailing around with no lap belt and gum stuck to our seats. You deserve to be the driver of your life, and you can build a boat stronger than the sharks. If you’re here, you’ve already started!
