Hi, I'm Emilee and I've been working as a child and family therapist for about 3 years now. I graduated with my Master's degree in 2022 and recently moved up to the Salem area. I'm currently based in the Salem-Keizer school district and have telehealth availability in the afternoons.

I believe that healing comes from acceptance, self-compassion, and personal exploration. I aim to help my clients find balance between empowerment and accountability. Shame often impedes progress and keeps us stuck. As such, I take a positive, person-centered approach to highlight strengths as well as challenges. I incorporate play, coping skills, distress tolerance strategies, and existentialism in my practice. I love to explore the things that make life meaningful. While I have experience with a range of presenting issues, I specialize in working with LGBTQIA+ populations, manifestations of trauma, attachment issues, and family stress.

Whether you're going through issues with trauma, anger, relationships, anxiety, or just navigating the stress of the world, it would be my pleasure to walk by your side and be with you through your healing journey.

I approach the therapeutic relationship as a client’s journey of self-exploration to increase their self-awareness and understanding. This approach emphasizes the client's resources for becoming self-aware and any barriers to personal growth, places the client at the center of therapy, and allows the client to determine the direction of therapy.

From my experience, clients are much more inclined to own and operate a solution if it is their own. I believe the client has the answers to their questions.

Depending on the client and the situation I use a variety of counseling techniques and theories. I use a comprehensive approach to the therapeutic alliance utilizing techniques from Solution Focused, Person Centered, Cognitive Behavioral Theory, through motivational interviewing and talk therapy. Essentially, I help the client identify their problem, their resources and motivation for change, and how they interpret and respond to how they feel and act towards situations.

I believe that all individuals have the ability to reach their greatest potential by building a therapeutic relationship built on support, empathy, unconditional positive regard, mutual respect, and acceptance for the client.

I hold a Master’s Degree in Counseling from Oregon State University. I am a Licensed Professional Counselor Associate. I uphold confidentiality and abide by the ethics, laws, and policies in regard to privacy.

Welcome, the first thing you might have noticed is the missing “E” in my name. That’s all thanks to my Eastern European roots that followed me overseas to the great Pacific Northwest. I immigrated to the US when I was only 5 years old, but one thing I brought with me and kept is my native language. Thanks to that I’m proud to be a multi-cultural counselor who can provide counseling in both English and Russian.

After graduating high school, I pursued the field of finance for my bachelor’s degree and spent four years in the corporate world. During that time, my faith drew me towards helping others, volunteering and being a support and mentor for many young adults. Two years into my corporate job I realized my true calling and pursued a master’s degree in school counseling. I completed my program and have been working as a counselor since.

Helping people looks different depending on the counselor they might work with. When it comes to my practice, the focus comes from a Cognitive Behavioral Therapy standpoint. This is a short-term therapeutic approach aimed at making different choices. Each one of us has the power to make choices that will lead to different outcomes and sometimes we just need a little guidance along the way. This includes learning new skills and exploring capabilities that we might not be utilizing.

When it comes to clientele, I specialize in working with youth. This includes teens, young adults, married people, and anyone else who thinks they turn 21 during every birthday. I am happy to support my clients through anxiety, conflicts with others, self-esteem issues, pursuing career change, and much more. I am very passionate about my work and its always rewarding to see that you were a piece of the puzzle that helped someone see the bigger picture and grow.

Finding the right fit for your counseling needs is very important so if you believe I might be a good fit, please complete the application below.

Hello and welcome!

After obtaining my Master's in Social Work, I moved from Michigan to Oregon to further my career and immerse myself in the diverse experiences the west coast offers. With over six years as a behavioral health specialist at an outpatient medical facility, I've had the opportunity to conduct therapy with a broad spectrum of individuals and families. This experience has been a driving force behind my transition into private practice, especially considering the scarcity of therapists in the Rogue Valley. I am deeply passionate about working with adolescents and adults of all ages. I've had the privilege of gaining extensive experience working with new parents, particularly those who have grappled with postpartum depression and anxiety.

As a licensed clinical social worker with a Master's degree from Grand Valley State University, I bring a compassionate and experienced approach to therapy. I offer personalized therapy sessions tailored to your specific needs. My empathetic approach creates a non-judgemental space for you to address personal challenges and find inner peace.

My expertise spans various therapeutic modalities, including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Mindfulness, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Gestalt Therapy, Strength-Based Therapy, and Narrative Therapy. Recognizing the need for professional support is a significant and courageous step, and I genuinely appreciate that you've taken it. I'm here to help and support you on this journey.

Important Note: I uphold confidentiality and abide by the ethics, laws, and policies in regard to privacy.

My name is Taylor Smith (she/her) and I entered clinical social work because I believe in the power of relationship as a vehicle for growth and healing, and because I also believe it’s important to recognize the systems of power, control, and culture that impact our well being. I strive to be BIPOC and LGBTQIA+ allied and affirming. I value helping individuals find peace and joy in their identity.

Modalities I pull from include: Compassion Focused Therapy (CFT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Internal Family Systems (IFS), and Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing Therapy (EMDR). Teachers who guide me in this work include Tara Brach, Pixie Lighthorse, Nedra Glover Tawwab, Gabor Mate and my own therapist/healing work. An overarching goal I have for clients I work with is for them to build tolerance for the whole spectrum of emotions and learn to experience them as neutral information, or even as wisdom that leads to informed choice.

Experiences that led me down the path of clinical social work include several years of social justice work in Oregon prisons during my undergraduate studies at the University of Oregon and seven years of advocacy and peer counseling for survivors of gender-based violence. I completed my Master of Social Work (MSW) at Portland State University in 2022 and am currently a Certified Social Work Associate (CSWA) under supervision and working towards licensure. For the past year and a half I worked as a behavioral health consultant in a primary care setting addressing whole person health: mental, emotional, physical and day to day functional well being. I look forward to pulling this wider scope into practice here at Stronger Oregon.

Common labels we put on experiences that might be a good fit for my expertise include: anxiety, stress, trauma, abuse, gender affirming care, grief, attachment wounding, codependency, family members of people with addiction, boundary setting work, and life change/transitions. This is a non-exhaustive list and if my approach seems like a good fit for you, I encourage you to reach out!

I work from a pragmatic, yet open approach to therapy that considers the experiences and narratives one has in relation to their social location, beliefs, community, relationships, culture, and spirituality. This allows me to attune and empathically understand what patients are bringing into sessions and how I may aid in bringing clarity to the issues at hand and what may be done for therapeutic progress to occur.

I believe therapy to be a collaborative and flexible process where therapist and clients work together to determine how sessions will proceed as therapy progresses. I hold a master’s degree in Marriage, Couples, and Family Therapy from Lewis and Clark College. Major course work included applied child and adolescent development, family development, couples therapy, group counseling, and applying systemic perspectives towards therapeutic practice. During my program's yearlong practicum, I was able to work with a wide range of populations due to my externship placement in a primary health care setting. I also worked a year as an ABA technician through a clinic specializing treatment with children with autism.

I primarily use behavioral based modalities such as CBT or DBT with my clients. I also use structural family therapy when working with families, as well as using play therapy or art supplies to allow clients to be able to converse or express themselves more comfortably.

I have over 10 years experience working in residential and community settings providing services to youth and their families. I draw from many modalities and adjust based on my client’s needs.

I received my Masters degree in Clinical Counseling from George Fox University in 2013. This new career path came after I had been a foster parent for several years. I have much experience with youth in foster care and their caregivers. I am certified Post Adoption and FosterCare therapist with ORPARC which has given me a strong foundation when working with this population. I also really enjoy working towards reunification goals both with the biological family and the youth as they navigate emotions especially after a long periods in care.

For younger children, I believe their language is play so will often incorporate play therapy techniques in sessions. Parent participation is strongly recommended as young people often struggle with big emotions and don’t know how to express themselves. The best way for me to teach them and incorporate better coping strategies is for them to practice at home as well.

For tweens, teens and young adults I believe developing their voice and autonomy is very important. We will navigate treatment planning and therapy goals collaboratively with parental involvement as necessary. I rely strongly on Dialectical Behavioral Therapy(DBT) for this age believing the positive effects in learning distress tolerance, interpersonal effectiveness, emotional regulation, and mindfulness skills will benefit everyone. DBT is especially effective when treating youth experiencing suicidal ideations or self harm.

I will work with any diagnosis including but not limited to Anxiety, Depression, PTSD, ADHD, and Oppositional Defiant Disorder. I am accepting of all cultures, sexual and gender orientations. I look forward to getting to know you and help you be your best self!

Our Work Together

For adults:

I have been described as calm, grounded, attentive, and caring. I believe healing cannot be forced and we go at your own pace. At the same time, we will remain attentive to what in your life is wanting to change, and I will help you find courageous action to make it happen. Joy reveals what nourishes our true self. Grief shows us what we have loved, and what we want to preserve. Fear reveals the edge of what we know, and where we might grow.

My “theoretical approach” draws upon the principles of attachment theory and interpersonal neurobiology to create an environment of safety and trust. Here you can come into deeper knowing of your own feelings, and discover what you truly value and want from life and relationships. From this place of knowing, the courage to make change, the ability to accept what we cannot, “and the wisdom to know the difference” can all be found.

Rather than looking for canned answers or interventions, I give attention to what is happening between us in the moment. As trust is built between us, old relationship patterns, limited ways of thinking, and unfelt feelings appear for exploration and healing. You will be held in acceptance while also challenged to follow where the seed of life is wanting to grow within you.

My degree is in Clinical Social Work, and my employment background is in crisis work. In times of emotional confusion or intense pain, I use mindfulness-based skills and expressive art practices (drawing, poetry, song) to help you find safety and expression for overwhelming emotions, thoughts, or images so that they can be felt and understood. Panic and anxiety can be soothed, grief can be expressed, and depression transformed into creativity.

I am deeply influenced by Jungian ideas and my own experiences as a psychotherapy client are rooted in this framework. You are welcome to bring your night dreams, visionary imagination, and creative work into our conversations. I also incorporate ecotherapy and look to Nature as a third partner in our work, as I believe that the Earth is our first source for healing, and our deepest teacher on relationships and wholeness.

Gender, race, sexuality, disability, body type, cultural background, and other forms of lived identity are important parts of who we are. In our sessions you will be empowered to witness and draw strength from all parts of yourself, seen and unseen.

For some, “feeling better” can happen in a matter of moments. For others, the healing journey becomes the privilege of a lifetime. You can expect from our time together that you will be given usable practices to find relief from emotional distress, while also receiving support to carry forward the healing into and with your own life. What we do will reflect what you want and need at this time. I look forward to meeting you!

For kids:

I enjoy being a children’s therapist because I love spending time with kids! For fun, I enjoy music, singing, learning about plants and animals (like my friend Jennifer, the chicken in the photo), writing, and being outside with my family. I have a French bulldog named Lily who loves to go for walks around Salem. My family loves card games, especially Magic the Gathering and Pokémon. As a mom, I know the joys and challenges of being a parent, and as a former child, the confusion and excitement of growing up.

As your therapist, we will spend time together playing, drawing, singing, reading books, or talking. If you have been hurt, I will be a safe adult to talk to, who can help you make sense of what happened. If following directions is confusing or difficult, or if you have feelings that are sometimes “too big” to control, we can talk together about how to make sense of them and how to ask for help. If friendships are difficult, we can practice how to make friends and be a friend. If you have a game you want to play, I will be excited to play it with you! I am with you however you want to be that day. Our time together is just for you.

My ideal client is struggling with emotion dysregulation and compulsive behaviors in reaction to difficult emotions. They are looking for assistance in managing these emotions, and open to developing a new relationship with their feelings and thoughts in order to pursue what is important to them.

I approach counseling from a cognitive-behavioral framework, understanding that our thoughts, emotions, and behaviors are inextricably linked to one another. However, I believe that we all have the power to become who we want to be. I utilize Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, assisting my clients to identify their values and live in accordance with them. I completed my Master's in Marriage & Family Counseling in 2015, and have been practicing as a licensed professional counselor (LPC) since 2017.

What you are experiencing is hard. And opening up to talk about it sometimes feels even harder. We all need a helping hand at some point, but reaching out for that help takes so much courage. I commend you for even getting to the point of reading this profile. If you can believe it, things can get so much better if you are willing to reach out.
