In a safe, non-judgmental therapeutic space, as a graduate from the MSW program at the University of Oklahoma and +15 years as an LCSW, guided by authenticity & respectful curiosity, I seek to give you as a client at Stronger Oregon Roseburg Therapy LLC opportunities for growth, positive change and renewed hope through engaging you in such therapeutic process as awareness, self-discovery,  problem identification, exploration of options and priorities and self-determination for problem solving of choice.

As I claim to be no author or expert in control of your thoughts, emotions, behaviors, and so-called life, I would like you to understand that it is humanly impossible to guarantee any specific outcomes regarding your stated counseling goals. It is my belief that positive outcomes from positive counseling/therapy experience are naturally successfully  achievable when, throughout the counseling process, there is the presence of such elements as willingness to be honest to self and another, having an inquisitive open mind and the courage for self-discovery process (i.e. discovery of one’s authentic voice),  to feel, think, become aware of the authentic self, self-aspiration, self-determination and self-empowerment for positive change, and a good “fit” between client and therapist.

By creating a therapeutic space also marked by acceptance allowing the clients to enter in the therapeutic client-therapist relationship “where they are” and “as who they are”, I encourage you as my client to avoid feeling hesitant or afraid of asking questions or voicing your concerns or preferences.  My approach to therapy – humanistic, flexible, holistic, person-centered strengths-based & evidence base approach oriented - is grounded in extensive clinical training, and informed by psychological, cultural, and social theory.  As I am equipped with American – European - Asian educational background, multi-cultural experiences, and multi-lingual skills such as Vietnamese, French, the scope of my work also extends to transcultural clientele in need of therapeutic services.

Note: I also treat people with Image Transformation Therapy (ImTT)

I have lived on the South Coast of in Oregon for six years. I am very fortunate to be working as a mental health counselor for Stronger Oregon as it has been rewarding and fostered my personal and professional growth.

I have training and experience in treating anxiety, depression, adult ADHD, adult spectrum disorder, bipolar disorder and personality disorders.

I graduated in 1986 from the University of Utah where I was first trained in the cognitive behavioral approach. I worked as a paraprofessional at the University of Utah Counseling Center for 18 months, learning and applying CBT for general and test anxiety, depression, assertiveness training, mindfulness and meditation.

I was also the teacher's assistant for the psychology of dreams class for six years. I became a father of four children and went back to graduate school in 1998 and graduated with a Master's Degree in Counseling with Mental Health Specialization from the University of Pheonix in 2001. I have held an LPC since 2003.

I was a clinical director for 14 years in Utah prior to moving to Oregon in 2016. I am very proficient in diagnosing mental health conditions, but I work with a person, not a diagnosis.

My name is Taylor Smith (she/her) and I entered clinical social work because I believe in the power of relationship as a vehicle for growth and healing, and because I also believe it’s important to recognize the systems of power, control, and culture that impact our well being. I strive to be BIPOC and LGBTQIA+ allied and affirming. I value helping individuals find peace and joy in their identity.

Modalities I pull from include: Compassion Focused Therapy (CFT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Internal Family Systems (IFS), and Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing Therapy (EMDR). Teachers who guide me in this work include Tara Brach, Pixie Lighthorse, Nedra Glover Tawwab, Gabor Mate and my own therapist/healing work. An overarching goal I have for clients I work with is for them to build tolerance for the whole spectrum of emotions and learn to experience them as neutral information, or even as wisdom that leads to informed choice.

Experiences that led me down the path of clinical social work include several years of social justice work in Oregon prisons during my undergraduate studies at the University of Oregon and seven years of advocacy and peer counseling for survivors of gender-based violence. I completed my Master of Social Work (MSW) at Portland State University in 2022 and am currently a Certified Social Work Associate (CSWA) under supervision and working towards licensure. For the past year and a half I worked as a behavioral health consultant in a primary care setting addressing whole person health: mental, emotional, physical and day to day functional well being. I look forward to pulling this wider scope into practice here at Stronger Oregon.

Common labels we put on experiences that might be a good fit for my expertise include: anxiety, stress, trauma, abuse, gender affirming care, grief, attachment wounding, codependency, family members of people with addiction, boundary setting work, and life change/transitions. This is a non-exhaustive list and if my approach seems like a good fit for you, I encourage you to reach out!

“When you least expect it, Nature has cunning ways of finding our weakest spot…Right now you may not want to feel anything. Perhaps you never wished to feel anything…But feel something you obviously did. …If there is pain, nurse it. And if there is a flame, don’t snuff it out. Don’t be brutal with it. We rip out so much of ourselves to be cured of things faster…But to make yourself feel nothing so as not to feel anything ― what a waste!” - André Aciman

Do you feel disconnected & detached? Are you struggling to find peace & security with yourself or in your relationships? Our minds & bodies are interdependent- so reliant on one another that they often try to protect themselves by splitting apart or shutting down. Pain, loss, & stress are unavoidable & it can be so tempting to numb ourselves to try to minimize their impact. Inevitably, we numb the good along with the bad.

As a Master in Social Work and pre-licensed clinician I’ve worked with clients of all ages and circumstances, but have dedicated much of my personal study over the years to sex and relationship dynamics. In my private practice, I specialized in working with clients who are in relationship transitions. Some may be seeking conscious uncoupling, navigating painful breakups, identifying and understanding patterns in romantic or platonic relationships, shifting from monogamy into polyamory or other partnership structures, or working to better understand their own bodies when it comes to sex, sexuality, and gender experiences alone and with peers or partners.

Whether you have a specific goal in mind, need someone to offer blanket support, or seek to learn and practice new skills, I can incorporate interventions from a variety of modalities, including compassion-focused therapy, narrative therapy, CBT, DBT, art therapy, EFT-tapping, attachment-based therapy, Gestalt, eclectic therapy, somatic therapy, and mindfulness & guided meditation. We all need something different to tap into our unique healing and growth. Vulnerability is uncomfortable at best but so very necessary, & I would be honored to accompany you on a journey to find your way to face these challenges with confidence, strength, grace, & resilience.

I am happy you’re here, & I can’t wait to meet you!

My practice is person-centered, which means it is anti-capitalist and liberationist: for fat bodies, for LGBTQIA+ bodies, for disabled bodies, and for black and brown bodies first and foremost.

As someone who identifies as bicultural, I can empathize with the many barriers associated with finding a provider who can understand various cultural differences that take place in our world. I want to help you reach your goals in a way that works best for you and your learning style. My theoretical framework is person centered and trauma informed, to provide you with the most personalized experience. I like to incorporate multiple therapy perspectives that include; Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), as well as Mindfulness.

I have experience working in crisis services as well as outpatient Telehealth settings. My educational background includes completing a Masters in Applied Psychological Science from Pacific University. During my studies, I participated in a year-long clinical internship that focused on supporting people with Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) and Anxiety using the evidence based practice of Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP). I enjoy working with people of various backgrounds who are struggling to manage their symptoms of anxiety or depression and are looking for support in taking back control of their lives.

I am committed to creating an environment that is inclusive and respectful to all people regardless of race, color, culture, religion, spiritual practice, sex, age, socioeconomic status, sexual orientation, gender identity or gender expression.
