I was born in Portland and grew up in the Northwest, graduating from Linfield College in McMinnville, OR before working as a Vocational Rehabilitation Counselor in Oregon for 17 years. I returned to graduate school at mid-life and earned a Masters Degree in Social Work from Eastern Washington University in 2006. I completed my clinical license (LCSW) in Montana, while working at the largest elementary school in the state for 8 years, before returning to Oregon to be closer to my family.

While in Montana I practiced individual and group therapy with children and their families. I also coached and refereed youth and middle school football for 10 years and use motivational interviewing and life coaching techniques in my daily practice.

I am a Cognitive Behavioral Therapist (CBT), which is short term in nature and focuses on providing you tools and new ways to think about your problems, so you can begin to start making needed changes in your life. There are no magic pills or painless solutions to most life issues, but CBT can give you the tools you need to help you make the small and larger changes needed for your life to start improving. It is up to you.

I help people who realize that some things in their life are not working and need to change. The world has shifted and we need to adapt to rapidly changing events beyond our control; as well as get some daily relief from the ongoing stress, anxiety, poor sleep and depression many people face daily.

Since February 2020 I have been doing remote Teletherapy with adults and older teens and found it works to help people change their lives. Be prepared to do your homework, I always give you more to do between our sessions, so you can progress at your own pace.

When life feels overwhelming, when sharks are circling your vessel with teeth bigger than your engine, you’ll need to upgrade to a bigger boat – that is, a bigger toolbox. You need more resources, more support, more skills. We’ve all been there. The cool thing is, once we build this bigger boat – toolbox – it will serve us the rest of our days. Once you have those skills, nothing can take them away.

In my work, I draw from a number of modalities and practices, but my primary approach is called ACT (Acceptance and Commitment Therapy). To me, ACT is about freedom. Freedom from the destructive thoughts that hold you back. Freedom from enslavement to painful emotions and the frantic efforts to make them stop. It’s about not feeling like a prisoner in your own head. Since receiving my Master of Social Work degree in 2007, I’ve spent much of my career working with people living with acute and chronic illness, particularly cancer. My life’s work is helping people adjust to difficult life changes, depression, anxiety, grief and loss, and other challenges. I have a special place in my heart for women transitioning to motherhood and the post-partum issues that so often arise, and individuals facing the ongoing challenges of parenting. I love the expressive arts and using poetry therapy (which sounds stuffy and boring but isn’t) to help clients find their own voice. I am open to working with adults of all ages, teens, and families. LGBTQ+ clients welcomed and valued.

My approach is grounded in compassion. It is about finding your own strengths and bolstering them with new skills to spark real and lasting change. I believe in kindness, humor, and connection, and I believe there is hidden treasure in everyone. Struggle is part of life, but struggle shouldn’t drive the bus, leaving us flailing around with no lap belt and gum stuck to our seats. You deserve to be the driver of your life, and you can build a boat stronger than the sharks. If you’re here, you’ve already started!

I believe that everyone can reach an optimum state of health. I employ an eclectic (or including all kinds of therapy types) approach with a strong reliance on cognitive-behavioral aspects. I am trained in EMDR, Trauma-Focused CBT, PCIT therapy, Infant/Toddler Mental Health, mindfulness techniques, and possess a certificate in Substance Abuse Treatment. I also have several years experience and training with sexual assault and domestic violence.

For my formal education and training; after completing my bachelor degree and obtaining a Substance Abuse Certificate, I realized I was not able to assist clients with trauma or other issues. So, I went back to school to get the degree I needed to be able to help all the people who came to me. Now, I have a Master’s degree in Mental Health Counseling.

My career began with teenagers in residential treatment for substance abuse, after this I worked with a younger group of 5-11 year olds in residential treatment for behavior problems. From there I moved to adults with legal issues and substance abuse, while having a second job as a sexual assault counselor. I have worked with very young children, under 1 year old and their parents, as well as older adults who are in need of resolving old conflicts in their past so they can look forward to the future and all others in between.

The therapy techniques we use depend on you and what works best for you, this is a team effort with you in the lead. Let’s talk about how I can help you today. I welcome all ages and backgrounds.

My counseling style is strengths-based because I enjoy helping others find and explore their strengths.  I value helping clients feel less alone and isolated. Whether you are struggling with anxiety, depression, identity issues, posttraumatic stress, family or relationship problems, dealing with life’s transitions and challenges, or seeking to improve your overall well-being, I can help you develop the strategies, skills, and insight to do so.

I offer individual, couples, adolescent, couples, and family therapy.  I use a Cognitive Behavioral (CBT) approach to help others overcome beliefs that are interfering with reaching goals or attaining personal happiness.  I also teach clients how to calm anxiety and other psychiatric symptoms by practicing mindfulness using MBCT (Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy) and learning to use acceptance as a coping skill.  I also incorporate elements of DBT (emotion regulation, interpersonal effectiveness, and distress tolerance) into my practice to help individuals learn to manage emotions and tolerate distress in a healthy way.

I will support you in realizing your true potential with kindness and compassion.  You can create your life the way you want it to be, and I would love to be your companion on this magnificent journey! I am a telehealth therapist in Oregon currently and offering sessions through a secure video portal.  Video sessions are convenient, effective, and empowering!

Therapeutic Approaches: CBT, DBT, MBCT, Ego State Therapy, IFS, Play Therapy, Brief Solution-Focused, Person-Centered

Education/Experience:  I hold a BS in Psychology from Old Dominion University.  I then received an MS in Special Education from George Mason University, and was a special education teacher for 8 years (worked exclusively with individuals with Asperger’s for 3 years), prior to returning to school to receive a master’s in Mental Health Counseling from Nova Southeastern University in 2017.  My coursework emphasized community mental health aspects, interdisciplinary collaboration, prevention of dysfunction, and direct service.  This coursework provided broad-based training designed to help individuals who struggle with substance abuse, family violence, divorce, aging, and general emotional problems.  I completed my internship in counseling at the APA-accredited Faulk Center for Counseling in Boca Raton, FL, where I was an outpatient counselor for one year.  I then worked as both a community counselor and school-based counselor, working with children and adolescents, for National Counseling Group in Northern Virginia.  Upon moving to Oregon, I began working at a community mental health agency for one and a half years, working in an outpatient setting, and also providing crisis services as needed.

When we journey through life it begins in wonder and amazement. However in time beauty is lost and the magic drains from the world. This magic is not gone, it lies dormant within our hearts where all is possible.

You have found yourself in a strange new world, but feel you don't belong. Afraid to reveal your true self and what you believe. What fears do you need to face? What stands between you and your happiness? Is life possible after trauma? When you learn to wield your mind skillfully like a sword, there is no foe too great and no challenge too steep.

Specialties: I have a passion for helping the LGBTQ+ community with anxiety, depression, trauma, and addictive thoughts and behaviors. I strongly believe in practicing and teaching meditation skills for formal and informal practice, building self-confidence and awareness through Non-Dual and integral philosophy, and self-empowerment through support in navigating life's many challenges.

Modalities: I have primarily found Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Motivational Interviewing (MI), Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT), and Person Centered Therapy to be the pillars of my therapeutic style. Additionally I have completed basic training for EMDR which I have found to be using in addressing post-traumatic symptoms and self-defeating thoughts and beliefs that hold us back.

Education: I have earned my Bachelor's degree from Portland State University majoring in psychology and earned my Master's degree in Applied Psychological Sciences with a clinical focus from Pacific University.

Experience: I have extensive experience with teens and young adults. I worked at Albertina Kerr, an in-patient setting, for children and teens who were experiencing severe emotional, mental, and existential distress. I was an intern counselor in an outpatient setting at William Temple House where I primarily helped young adults. I was employed by Marion County Children's Behavioral Health as both a crisis mental health specialist and therapist for children and teens for crisis intake and ongoing outpatient therapy.

There seems to be a rhythm to life. An outflow and an inflow, an up and a down. There is also a clockwise spin to the future or counterclockwise spin to the past projections in our minds. The more to the outer edges there is chaos and life experienced when attached or avoiding. But the more toward the center and into our self we go, the more we reach a point of order, stillness, and life when unattached and accepting of what may come.
