My name is Michael Kurle (pronounced Curlee) and I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker.  I am very passionate about helping, advocating, and encouraging people and this has led me to my chosen career of therapy.  I am a recent Oregon transplant, having moved from my native state of Oklahoma as I have always had this pull on me to move to the Pacific Northwest and with everything that happened with COVID we made the decision to sell our home and uproot 40+ years of our life and move.

I practice utilizing several different treatment “modalities” or methods.  My preferred method is to use Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, or CBT for short.  CBT is the most widely used treatment modality and has the most research proving how effective it is, especially with things such as anxiety and depression.  I also am trained in EMDR, Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing, which is an amazing therapy tool that is gaining more and more popularity in working with trauma related issues and is being expanded to include phobias, depression, and anxiety.  Motivational Interviewing and Trauma Focused CBT are also modalities I am trained in and experienced with when those interventions best suit what someone needs.

I started my educational journey with a Bachelors degree in Developmental Psychology and proceeded to join the workforce then.  I spent almost a decade working in various aspects in the Oklahoma Department of Human Services as a social worker working with children and families and then followed my path to be a therapist and earned my Master of Social Work degree from the University of Oklahoma.  I spent nearly two decades working with children and families and in the past couple of years I have turned my focus towards adults and helping adults of all ages.

Age ranges for individual and family services are from High School through the entirety of adulthood.  Seeking help and being open to explore things in therapy requires bravery and a desire to heal, both of which you have if you are reading this.  I would be honored if you would allow me to join you as you travel towards health and happiness.

I have lived on the South Coast of in Oregon for six years. I am very fortunate to be working as a mental health counselor for Stronger Oregon as it has been rewarding and fostered my personal and professional growth.

I have training and experience in treating anxiety, depression, adult ADHD, adult spectrum disorder, bipolar disorder and personality disorders.

I graduated in 1986 from the University of Utah where I was first trained in the cognitive behavioral approach. I worked as a paraprofessional at the University of Utah Counseling Center for 18 months, learning and applying CBT for general and test anxiety, depression, assertiveness training, mindfulness and meditation.

I was also the teacher's assistant for the psychology of dreams class for six years. I became a father of four children and went back to graduate school in 1998 and graduated with a Master's Degree in Counseling with Mental Health Specialization from the University of Pheonix in 2001. I have held an LPC since 2003.

I was a clinical director for 14 years in Utah prior to moving to Oregon in 2016. I am very proficient in diagnosing mental health conditions, but I work with a person, not a diagnosis.

My name is Mary Kay Jabs and I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker  (LCSW). I received my Masters of Social Work (MSW)  through the University of New England.  My core work experience has been working with children, youth, and families. I have experience working as a traveling school based therapist for age ranges from early elementary through high school, working as  a therapist for Juvenile Crime Prevention with target age range of 9-12 years old and youth’s respective family ,and  Parent Child Interaction Treatment (PCIT) with target age range of 2.5 to 6.5 years old and respective family. I was born in Portland and grew up in the Northwest, graduating from Linfield College in McMinnville, OR before working as a Vocational Rehabilitation Counselor in Oregon for 17 years. I returned to graduate school at mid-life and earned a Masters Degree in Social Work from Eastern Washington University in 2006. I completed my clinical license (LCSW) in Montana, while working at the largest elementary school in the state for 8 years, before returning to Oregon to be closer to my family.

While in Montana I practiced individual and group therapy with children and their families. I also coached and refereed youth and middle school football for 10 years and use motivational interviewing and life coaching techniques in my daily practice.

I am a Cognitive Behavioral Therapist (CBT), which is short term in nature and focuses on providing you tools and new ways to think about your problems, so you can begin to start making needed changes in your life. There are no magic pills or painless solutions to most life issues, but CBT can give you the tools you need to help you make the small and larger changes needed for your life to start improving. It is up to you. 

I help people who realize that some things in their life are not working and need to change. The world has shifted and we need to adapt to rapidly changing events beyond our control; as well as get some daily relief from the ongoing stress, anxiety, poor sleep and depression many people face daily. 

Since February 2020 I have been doing remote Teletherapy with adults and older teens and found it works to help people change their lives. Be prepared to do your homework, I always give you more to do between our sessions, so you can progress at your own pace.

I believe that people have a choice about their behavior, but they are also a product of their environment and experience, influenced by culture and relationships. I work with my clients to raise awareness of their motivations and goals, and to gain control of their thoughts, emotions, and behaviors. The client is the expert on their own experience, and the counselor is the expert on change who helps the client recognize their strengths for overcoming barriers. I build a therapeutic relationship with clients based on empathy, curiosity, and respect. I celebrate diversity and I advocate for people from all populations, especially those from marginalized and oppressed groups.

Prior to becoming a counselor, I was an advocate for victims of crime, specializing in domestic violence, sexual assault and stalking. I have specialized training in the dynamics of abusive relationships and trauma-informed care. I am also passionate about supporting first responders, veterans, caregivers, and people who frequently witness or hear about trauma in their professional or personal lives.

Additionally, I have been an elementary school counselor, so I like working with children and families on social emotional development. My theoretical approach to counseling is based on cognitive behavioral therapy with influences from narrative therapy, motivational interviewing and mindfulness. My passion for mental health led me into a career where I am privileged to walk alongside others who want to improve their lives. I studied psychology at the University of Oregon and social work at Portland State University. As of 2024, I have six years of experience in the mental health field and have worked with clients in a variety of settings, including schools, outpatient, and intensive outpatient (“IOP”) therapy. I have had success with helping others navigate anxiety disorders, mood disorders, trauma disorders, neurodevelopmental disorders (ADHD, ASD, FASD), and more. I enjoy helping others get through many tough spots in life, like family conflict, LGBTQ+ issues, school and career related issues, and life transitions.

As a member of the LGBTQ+ community, I am a proud provider of queer and trans-affirming care. This also means I welcome working with family members who want to improve their understanding and be better allies. I strive to meet everyone where they’re at and to create a judgment-free space. At the end of the day, I think we have more similarities with each other than differences, and we all want to live life as our true selves.

My clients would describe me as someone who is direct but gentle and determined but patient. I am someone who will enthusiastically encourage you to follow your path and also point out when you’re dousing the path with gasoline. I have been told that people feel like I handle their difficult stories with genuine respect and care. In the therapy room, I like to let you guide our conversation, but I’m also happy to provide structure to those who want it.

I’m an eclectic provider, but I gravitate towards narrative therapy, internal family systems, attachment-based therapy, and trauma-focused cognitive behavioral therapy. In plain English, that means that I like helping you make sense of the things that have happened to you, relearn how to connect with other people in a healthy way, and to teach you how to assess your own patterns and behaviors in a way that reduces your symptoms. I’m comfortable working with those 8 and up and adapt my approach to be developmentally appropriate.

Outside of the therapy room, I’m usually working on writing short stories, playing piano, gardening on my balcony, or getting into a new video game. I also have an unexplainable fondness for mediocre reality shows and time-consuming board games. If I wasn’t a therapist, I would be a science fiction author.
