My name is Deborah Harry, I was born in Bellingham, Washington, where I spent my first 15 years until my parent’s divorce. I was moved to Salem, Oregon when my Mom remarried, and boy was I unhappy about it! The tragedy of divorce and my difficult transition to Oregon bred a lot of anger and resentment that ultimately turned into a blessing…because I found counseling.

I remember walking out of my counselor’s office, almost a year later, knowing that I wanted to be a counselor.  I do not remember her name or what she looked like, but I will always remember how transformative that experience was, and how much she helped me.  Counseling didn’t change the difficult truths about my situation back then, but it did help me shift my mindset away from what had been lost, to what was in front of me.

I use a three-pronged therapeutic approach that involves Cognitive Behavior Therapy, a Strengths-Based Perspective, and Solution Focused Therapy. In a nutshell we’ll look at what thought and behavior patterns are contributing to your current state of well-being; what strengths and resources you bring to the table and how we can apply them to craft solutions instead of dwelling on problems.

I have a friendly, relaxed, and intuitive approach that I bring into our space that we will create together through telehealth. Relationship is important in the therapeutic process and I put great care into establishing a safe and secure foundation for us to work from. For my younger clients, I focus heavily on the parent-child relationship and family systems work, as that will be the most important relationship to strengthen in our time together.

I graduated with my Master’s in School Counseling in 2008 and several years of experience in mental health crisis work, suicide prevention, life skills training, and parenting skill building. I have experience working with all age levels but have a particular passion for working with parents as they negotiate the very tough job of raising children.
